Meet Mia
A bespoke wedding hat for a high society Italian wedding, in electric blue and gold sinamay.

A bespoke wedding hat Italy commission rarely arrives with a simple brief, and Mia was no exception. Electric blue and gold sinamay, built to hold her own against a blue trouser jumpsuit and gold accessories, for a high society wedding on the Italian coast this September. This is the story of how she came together.
The Brief
Most wedding guest hats are designed to sit alongside a dress. Mia was designed to sit alongside a jumpsuit, which changes the maths considerably. A jumpsuit has no skirt to balance a brim against, no waistline to echo, so the hat has to do more of the outfit's visual work on its own.
The brief called for something equal to that: a wide, confident brim in electric blue to match the trouser suit, finished with gold to pick up the accessories, for a wedding taking place against the Italian coastline in September. Nothing off the peg was ever going to answer that brief. It needed to be designed from scratch, for one client, one outfit, one day.
The Design
Mia's shape is built around a single sweeping, asymmetric brim in sinamay, its curve rising on one side and dipping low on the other, giving the whole piece a sense of movement even at rest. The main body of the hat is finished in a rich electric blue, with a warm gold edge running the full circumference of the brim and a slender gold band wrapping the base of the crown.

That gold edge is doing more than decoration. It outlines the whole silhouette in a single continuous line, so the shape reads clearly even from a distance across a wedding lawn, exactly what a hat worn to complement a jumpsuit, rather than a traditional dress, needs to do.
"With a jumpsuit, there's no skirt to soften things, so the hat has to carry more of the look. Mia needed enough presence to hold her own next to the trousers, without fighting the gold accessories. That balance was the whole design brief."

Why Sinamay for a Destination Wedding
Sinamay is a strong choice for a hot climate for practical reasons as much as aesthetic ones. It is lightweight, holds a sculpted shape well in heat and humidity, and travels far better than felt or fabric alternatives, an important consideration for a hat that needs to survive a flight to Italy and a day in the sun looking exactly as crisp as it did in the studio.
It also takes colour beautifully, which is why the electric blue and gold combination on Mia reads so cleanly rather than muddying at the edges, something that matters enormously when a hat is being colour-matched to a specific outfit rather than chosen off a rail.

Every Couture Piece Is a One-Off
Mia will not be repeated. That is the nature of Heather's couture range, each design is created once, for one client, one outfit and one occasion, then retired. It is a slower, more considered way of working than producing to a catalogue, but it is also the only way to guarantee that no one else at the wedding, or at any wedding, will be wearing the same hat.
That approach is built on training rather than habit. Heather trained in the UK and in France, including time spent with milliner and designer Tracy Chaplin refining freeform sculptural techniques, the same techniques behind Mia's sweeping brim, and she is a member of the British Millinery Association. Every couture commission, Mia included, is designed and made entirely by hand at her Cotswolds studio.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I commission a one-off hat for a destination wedding?
Yes. Heather designs couture pieces for weddings both in the UK and abroad, working from your outfit, colouring and the specific occasion, in the same way Mia was designed for a wedding in Italy.
How far in advance should I order a bespoke wedding hat?
As with any couture commission, more notice allows for a more considered design and fitting process. It's best to get in touch as early as possible once your outfit is confirmed, particularly for a date with a fixed travel deadline such as a destination wedding.
Is sinamay a good choice for a hot climate wedding?
Yes. Sinamay is lightweight, holds its shape well in heat and humidity, and travels more easily than heavier materials, which makes it a popular choice for hats designed to be worn abroad.
Can Heather design a hat to match an unconventional outfit, like a jumpsuit?
Yes. Every bespoke commission is designed around the specific outfit being worn, whether that's a traditional dress or something less conventional such as a jumpsuit or trouser suit.
Does Heather make more than one of the same couture design?
No. Couture pieces such as Mia are one-off designs, made once for one client. If you'd like something similar in spirit, a new piece would be designed specifically for you rather than repeated.
Commission Your Own One-Off Design
If you have an outfit that needs a hat with real presence, whatever the occasion or wherever in the world it's taking place, Heather can design something built entirely around it, the same way Mia came together for her Italian wedding.
